US Green Building Council & LEED
USGBC Mission: "To transform the way buildings and
communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally
and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves
the quality of life." The USGBC is composed of organizations of
professionals who are interested in promoting and expanding green building
practices.
LEED
is a third party certification that assigns credits for specific criteria
in the design and construction processes.
The US Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit organization that certifies sustainable schools, businesses, homes, hospitals, and neighborhoods. The USGBC is dedicated to expanding green building and education practices. The green building rating system of the USGBC is done by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) which is a national rating system for developing sustainable buildings. The six major areas include:
Sustainable
Site Development
Water Efficiency
Energy & Atmosphere
Material & Resources
Indoor Environmental Quality
Innovation & Design Process
The total possible points, compiled from the five categories, is 69. Depending
on the number of points earned, a building can be certified as Standard (26-32
points), Silver (33-38 points), Gold (39-51 points), or Platinum (52-69 points).
The Education Building received LEED Silver certification while the Frances Allen Black (FAB) Hall earned standard certification.
